Services for Claire Pope will be held Friday at 10 am at First Baptist Church, Meridian with Dr. Raymon Leake officiating. Burial will be the same day at 4 pm in Camp Hill, Alabama. James F. Webb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Claire Pope, 98, of Meridian, died Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Anderson Regional Medical Center.
Claire was born on August 27, 1913. She lived most of her childhood in Alabama. On March 17, 1934, she married Harrell Augustus Pope. They moved to Meridian in 1936. She has been a member of First Baptist Church since 1937. Through the years at First Baptist, she has been a Sunday school teacher in the young girls class, a GA leader, a member of the Womens Ministry, a Round Table Group, and has been on several tours around the world. Claire and her husband, Harrell owned a jewelry store called Popes Jewelers. After retiring, she enjoyed spending time with her husband and kids. She lived at Aldersgate Community for 14 years. She enjoyed a lot of hobbies there: Playing bingo, cards, and dominos she met some great friends while living at Aldersgate. Due to her declining health, she spent the last two and half years living with her Granddaughter and her family in Russell. She enjoyed crocheting, reading books, and telling her grandkids stories about her life. A few words to describe Claire are an amazing, faith driven, kind and generous woman who always had a smile on her face. Her celebration of life was an awesome 98 year journey. People say it was an honor and pleasure to have known such a fine lady.
Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Claire Carol Burcham of Lisbon, Ohio four grandchildren, Kendall Todd Pope of Meridian, Lisa Marie Goldy of Concordia, Kansas, Harrell Wayne Tubby Burcham of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Deidra Claire Wells and her husband Ronnie of Meridian 8 Great Grandchildren, Tyler and Jordy Lowery, Neill, Alex, and Brooklyn Burcham, Josh Wells and wife Allyson, Cohlby Wells, and Heather Goldy 2 Great Great Grandchildren, Hallie Marie Watts and Keaton Boswell sister in laws, Martha Jean Herring and Hilda Pope several nieces, nephews, and a few cousins a special sitter and friend, Fae Latham and a special lunchtime buddy, Kim Harrington.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and her husband Harrell Pope a son, Neill Pope and a great great granddaughter, Sara Lowery.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Smith, Ronnie Wells, Wayne Burcham, Joe Ross, Josh Wells, and Cohlby Wells. Honorary pallbearers are the deacons of First Baptist Church.
In Lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Aldersgate Community Chapel Fund, or First Baptist Church Mission Fund in her honor.
