Funeral services for Mrs. Cora Lee "Knootsie" Mitchell will be held Tuesday at 11 am at the First Presbyterian Church of DeKalb. Rev. Scott Phillips will be officiating. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery with Stephens Funeral Home of DeKalb in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Mitchell, 92, of DeKalb, passed away at her residence on Saturday. She was a retired teacher having taught at DeKalb High School for 20 years and then at East Mississippi Community College for 20 years. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi where she was able to graduate early at the age of 18. While at Ole Miss, she was part of the student delegation that helped re-establish the marching band. Mrs. Mitchell began her teaching career at the age of 19 when she agreed to teach math at DeKalb. She later obtained her master's degree from Mississippi State University. During this time, she married Mr. Landon "Mitch" Mitchell who was then the football coach at DeKalb. Mrs. Mitchell was an avid sports fan, particularly football and baseball. She and her husband regularly attended Kemper County High School, EMCC and Ole Miss sporting events. Mrs. Mitchell enjoyed researching the history of DeKalb and Kemper County, where she was an active member of the Kemper County Historical Society. She also loved attending her class reunions throughout the years. She enjoyed the outdoors and working in her yard, taking care of her azaleas and other flowers. It is said that she had the best tasting tomatoes of anyone.
Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her brother Bill Thomasson; sister-in-laws Helen Thomasson, Polly Thomasson, Chaney Thomasson, Ramona Apple and Virginia Mitchell along with many loving nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her beloved puppy Ms. Annie.
She was preceded in death by her parents Samuel and Cora Lee Thomasson, husband Landon "Mitch" Mitchell; son Lance Mitchell; brothers Hugh Thomasson, Samuel Thomasson Jr. and sister Elizabeth Hedgpeth.
The family would like to offer their sincere love and appreciation to Vickie McCoy and the many sitters and caregivers who attended to Mrs. Mitchell. They will always be thought of as angels to the family. And a special thank you to Emma Monroe for her many years of taking care of the Mitchell household.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, we would like donations sent to First Presbyterian Church of DeKalb or Ole Miss Band.
