Gladys Arletha Griffin Aycock

Services for Gladys Arletha Griffin Aycock will be held Friday, August 16, 2013 at 11 am at Webb Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Carl White and Franklin Denham officiating. Burial will in Meridian Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Aycock, 94, died Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Andersons Regional Medical Center. She was born February 4, 1919 in Houston, Mississippi. She was the sixth of twelve children of Dorothy Davis Griffin and Willis Jack Griffin. Gladys had six brothers and five sisters.

After marriage to Jack Thomas Aycock, she lived with him in West Point, Ms. for several years. With her husband being in the U.S. Navy, they moved to various locations which included Washington State and California. After Jack was honorably discharged from the Navy at the end of W.W. II, they returned to Meridian where they built their home.

Her first job in Meridian was selling tickets at the Alberta Theater. After working in other areas, she was contacted by Ms. Mary Majure to come to work at Queen City Nursing Home on the first day that it opened. She later worked at East Ms. State Hospital as a ward clerk. After retiring from the State Hospital she continued to work in the nursing field.

She was an active member in her community serving on the board of the Cancer Society. She was also a member of the Parkview Garden Club, the Council of Garden Clubs, and one of the founding members of the Youth Garden Club.

In 1947, she became a member of Highland Baptist Church located on 35th Avenue. She continued to be a Highland Baptist Church member until her death. Always a faithful member, she was the Superintendent of Sunday School Juniors and was a member and supporter of the WMU. She and a group from Highland also completed a series of studies to better equip Sunday School workers in other churches. She was a member of the Happy Highlander singing group under the direction of Rev. Franklin Denham and a member of the GoSeeDo, one of the church activities. She supported her church and Sunday School when ever her health permitted.

Survivors include her daughter, Janet Aycock Lowman and special soninlaw, Tony Lowman as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Thomas Aycock1980 parents, Dorothy and Jack Griffin sisters, Ethel Griffin Orr, Effie Griffin Martin, Cora Griffin Sykes, Opal Griffin Casey, and Odean Griffin Vaughn brothers, John Griffin, Henry Griffin, Willis Griffin, Robert Griffin, Rufus Griffin, and Billy Griffin.

Pallbearers will be Joey Vaughn, Jerry Vaughn, James Duke Lippincott, Charles Lippincott, Wilson Lippincott, and Allan Hogan. Honorary pallbearers will be Ted E. Burton, Harry Mayer, Leroy Frances, Lavelle Massey, Jerry McCay, and Charles Stewart.

The family request memorials be made in her name to Highland Baptist Church Building Fund.
