Gwen Ross Slay
Services for Mrs. Gwen Ross Slay will be held Friday at 11 am at Webb Chapel with Bro. Lamar Lifer officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery with James F. Webb Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Slay, 85, of Meridian, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Poplar Springs Nursing Center. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Sarah Sunday School Class. She was born and grew up in Simpson County. Mrs. Slay graduated from CoLin Junior College and attended the University of Southern Mississippi before marrying her childhood sweetheart in 1946. They moved to Meridian in the late 40s. She retired at age 60 from the State of Mississippi and enjoyed those retirement years fishing and gardening with her late husband. She will be remembered for her generosity and love for others as she shared her blueberries, figs, and apples with her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Shields and her husband Jerry, and Betsy Miller and her husband Mike grandchildren, Jeremy Shields and his wife Heather, Shana McCants and her husband John, Jason Miller and his wife Kerry, and Matthew Miller and his wife Tracey great grandchildren, Kamryn Shields, Katie Shields, Jay McCants, Anna McCants, Ella Grace Miller, and Chloe Miller and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her husband, H.C. Heber Slay and her sisters, Edith Landry and Billye Everett.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Shields, John McCants, Jason Miller, Matthew Miller, James Ray Hopkins, and David Roberts.
