Mr. Harry Smith Simmons Retired Owner of Simmons Grocery
Services for Mr. Harry Smith Simmons will be held Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Paul Raley officiating. Interment will be at Magnolia Cemetery. James F. Webb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Simmons, age 95, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian. Mr. Simmons started his career in the grocery business by running a store in Meridian for a grocery company, then later he started his own grocery store. The Simmons Grocery store was a family business in every way, his loving wife Edith left a career as a nurse to help with the business and then later as the children became old enough they also worked in the store with their parents. The Grocery business was not the only thing that Harry excelled at, he was a lifelong golfer and played until he was 88. During his younger years he competed at a very high level and won several competitive tournaments. He was a member of Lakeview Golf Course and after retirement played 4 days a week, whether rain or shine, cold or hot, and sometimes at least 27 holes a day. He was a veteran of WWII while serving as a Storekeeper 1st Class, 9th Battalion Seabees, United States Navy.
He is survived by his son, Harry Clay Simmons and his wife Hope of Meridian Daughter, Alice Jones and her husband Andy of Montgomery, TX Six Grandsons and One Granddaughter Eleven Great Grandchildren and a special niece, Betty Garrison and numerous other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Edith Tate Simmons his mother and father, Higley and Alice Simmons Two sisters, Sadie Stone and Annie Merle Stinson and one brother, Rainer Simmons.
Pallbearers are Chris Simmons, Bobby Gibson, Jim Vaughn, Clay Jones, David Jones, Mark Jones.
Honorary Pallbears are Ken Peninger and Jeff Simmons.
Family requests that memorials be made to the Wesley House Community Center.
Visitation will be on Saturday, January 8, 2011 from 12 2p.m. at Webb Funeral Home.
