Herbert Strange

A Celebration of Life for Herbert Joe Strange "Herb" will be held on Monday, September 10, 2018, 11:00 a.m., at Webb Funeral Home in Meridian, Mississippi with Dr. John Temple officiating.
Herb was called by the Lord on Monday, September 3rd from his home in Meridian, where he has lived for the past 20 years. Herb touched many people throughout his life and will be remembered for his unique personality, charm, and strong work ethic. His family and friends take comfort in knowing that he is now under God's wing and will rest in eternal peace.
Herb was born on August 11, 1946 in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana. As a child he lived in Converse, Louisiana. He moved to Shreveport in the 8th grade. He graduated from Woodlawn High School in Shreveport in 1964.
As a young married man only 19 years old he went to work for the Kansas City Southern Railroad in Shreveport as an apprentice carman. After a few years he was transferred to Lake Charles and then to Greenville, Texas where he spent the next ten years of his work career.
While in Greenville, he was involved in many things other than work. He was very involved in youth sports, coaching and supporting Little League Baseball for many years. He spent countless hours picking up children before baseball practice, feeding them and taking them home after practice. He also was a basketball referee and officiated many high school games throughout East Texas in the mid 1970's. Also as a resident of Quinlan, TX in the late 60's and early 70's he served on the city council. He is also a member of the Masonic Lodge of Quinlan, TX.
In 1978 Herb was promoted to Mechanical Foreman and transferred with the Kansas City Southern (KCS) to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After many years in Baton Rouge he left the KCS to take on increasing roles of responsibility with short line railroads throughout the United States which included the Galveston Railroad in Galveston, Texas, and to his final role in railroading as the General Manager for the M&B in Meridian, Mississippi. After 42 years of railroading and keeping the trains on the tracks Herb retired.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years Shirley Kay Strange. As well as son, Patrick Strange and wife Amy of The Woodlands, TX, daughters Kimberly Strange Knowles of Katy, TX, and Brenda Kay Griffin and husband Greg of Laurel, MS.
Herb was the proud grandfather (papaw) to eight grandchildren, Catherine Oxford, Tony Brady and wife Tasha, Hunter Brady, Todd Strange, Matthew Strange, Andrew Knowles, David Knowles, and Mason Nettles and three great grandchildren, Jenna, Trevor, and Cade. Herb also has one surviving brother, Kester Strange and wife Mary Alice of Deville, LA.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Nannie Katherine Aucoin; father, Joseph Kester Strange; step father, Joe Aucoin; brother, Letcher Strange; sister, Mary Sapp; as well as an angel son that will be waiting for him in heaven.
A visitation will be held an hour prior to service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to The Ministry of Caring Fund at Poplar Springs Drive Baptist Church.
