James Skewes

Mr. James Buckingham Skewes

James Buckingham Skews, 81, died Monday at Riley Hospital. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but spent his whole life in Meridian; MS. Skewes was a graduate of The University of Mississippi.

While at Ole Miss he was a member of the Kappa Sigma social fraternity and of the Lamda Sigma journalist fraternity.

Skewes served as owner, editor-publisher of The Meridian Star from 1958 until his retirement in 1990. He was on the board which founded the Lamar Elementary School, the proudest achievement of his life.

He was also a lifetime member of the Kiwanis Club.

In the past, he also served on the boards of W.T.O.K television and Riley Memorial Hospital. In New Orleans, Skewes was a member of the Bienville Club and the Iris Club. He was also a member of the Royal Order of Saint George.

He was a lifelong Episcopalian and a member of The Church of the Mediator where he served as a Verger for many years.

Skewes was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Skewes. He is survived by his wife, Hilah McLean Skewes and several cousins.

Memorials may be sent to The Lamar School Foundation, The Church of the Mediator or favorite charities.

The funeral will be graveside at Magnolia Cemetery on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Helen Tester officiating. There will be no visitation. Graveside Services will be at Magnolia Cemetery.
