Graveside services for Mrs. Jeanne Caroline Ullman Steele will be held Monday, October 12, 2009 at 11:00 am at Beth Israel Cemetery with the Rabbi Valeria Cohen officiating. James F. Webb Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Steele, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2009 at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Edward Steele, Sr., Jeanne was born in Bristol, TN on August 12, 1919 to Ludwig and Loris S. Ullman and grew up in Meridian. She attended Marion Park Elementary, Kate Griffin Junior High, and received her high school diploma with honors from Meridian High School in 1937. She attended Hollins College VA and the University of Chicago where she studied medical illustration before meeting and marrying her husband of 59 years. Fulfilling her interest and love in the medical field, Jeanne returned to Meridian Junior College where she graduated in 1969 with an Associate Arts degree in Nursing and subsequently became a board certified Registered Nurse.

Jeanne was first and foremost a homemaker but also sought professional fulfillment outside the home. She applied her various talents in art and nursing at several Meridian businesses including Hamilton Schultz, Architects; the radiology practice of Dr. A. Wayne Sullivan, East Mississippi State Hospital, and St. Josephs Hospital.

During her productive lifetime, Jeanne was active in civic and social circles including the Crescent Literary Club, The Red Cross, and the Sisterhood of Temple Beth Israel. She was also involved in various local historical preservation projects benefiting the City of Meridian.

She is survived by her two sons, Charles E. Chuck Steele of Baybay, Leyte, Philippines, and James U. Jim Steele, and her daughter-in-law Wendy L. Steele of St. Marys, Georgia , and two granddaughters, Jennifer and Erica Steele of Apex, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a memorial be made to the Alzheimers Foundation.
