Jimmie Evans

      Jimmie Evans, age 90 of Meridian, Mississippi, passed away on December 23, 2023, at Poplar Springs Nursing Center.

     He is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Leslie and Mattie (McConnell) Evans; sisters, Dollie Evans and Ruby Dell Stine Taylor; and his brothers, Joe and Sam Evans.

     Jimmie is survived by his cousins, David Stewart and Jan Stewart Thames; nieces, Niccoli Haynes, Leigh Peregoy, Debra Asmus, Carol Williamson, and Patricia Parnell; nephews, Greg Stine, Doug Taylor, Johnny Evans; along with their respective spouses and children.

     Mr. Evans retired after 34 years as a teacher of history and geography at Meridian Community College (MCC).  He was a long-time advisor for Phi Theta Kappa and has served in various positions on numerous councils, committees, and organizations in support of and promotion of education.  Jimmie was also a staunch supporter of collegiate sports at MCC as well as his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi (USM).

     Jimmie is a long-standing member of Central Baptist Church of Meridian.  He is an Army Veteran who proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict.

       Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Webb & Stephens Funeral Home-North, located at 7774 Highway 39 North, Meridian, Mississippi 39305.

     Visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m.  Burial will take place at Briggs Chapel Cemetery in Porterville, Mississippi, following the funeral service.

     In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Jimmie Evans Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Fund at MCC or to St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee at https://www.stjude.org/donate.

     The family also requests that instead of following the Southern tradition of bringing food for the family before or after the funeral, please donate food to a needy family or to the organization of your choosing.
