Joseph Lee Newell, 84, of DeKalb, Mississippi, passed away on April 20, 2025. He was born on July 3, 1940, at home in Kemper County to Tatum and Mildred (Hammack) Newell.

Joseph, fondly known as Joe, lived a full and hardworking life as a farmer, factory worker, mechanic, woodsman, and a proud member of the Mississippi Army National Guard. He was admired for his quiet humor, love of music, readiness to help his neighbors, and passion for hunting and birdwatching. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a cherished friend to many.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Mary Gail Newell; his brother, Jack Newell (Louise); his three children, Michael (Carol), David (Zarella), and Shannon (Mark); his five grandchildren, Bradley (Michelle), Jordy (Sophia), Austin (Sarah), Constance, and Anna; and his eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Leon Newell, and his sister, Anne White.

Visitation for Joe will be held on Saturday, April 26th from 10-11:00 am at Bay Springs Baptist Church. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Mark Newell officiating the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
