Services for Mrs. Lyda Carol Brand Perkins will be held Wenesday, August 27,2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Webb Chapel with Rev. Roy Dabbs officiating. Burial will be on Thursday, August 28, at 1:00 p.m. in New Park Cemetery in Ft. Gaines, GA. James F. Webb Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Perkins, 70 died Monday, August 25, 2008 at her residence. For many years, she was a member of the local and area in daily and weekly newspapers, radio and televison. While at the Meridan Star, The Union Appeal and The Newton Record, she received a number of Mississippi Press Women's awards and a national award for her news stories and her weekly column. She also won Louisiana and Mississippi Associated Press Awards for her investigative news stories. She also worked as a news director for Q101 and WMOX radio, also for the Sherrif's Department and for the Bad Check Unit in the Lauderdale County Courthouse.
Her survivors include: daughter, Florence Bethany West Perkins Dassau of Helena,AL;sons: Ike McKelvain, Thomas Michael Perkins and John West Perkins all of Meridian;fourteen grandchildren: Ashley McKelvain, Daphne McKelvain, Ike McKelvain, Brandon Thurman, Brett Thurman, Justin Perkins, Jacob Perkins, Jordan Perkins, Mary Carol Dassau and Jackson Dassau;great grandchildren: Hannah Higgins, Lindsey McKelvain and Ike McKelvain, IV;first cousin, Bethany Sue Strong Sinnott of Salisbury, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Nell West Fleming Brand and Thomas Jackson Brand;maternal grandparents, Dr. Thomas Marion Fleming and Florence Bethany West Fleming; a daughter, Christy Leigh Thurman ; husband, John Burton Perkins
Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to service.
