James Alvin McElroy, Sr.

Services for Mr. James Alvin McElroy, Sr. will be held Friday, February 21, 2014 at 1:30 p.m., at Graveside with The Reverend Doctor Larry Hilliard, Reverend Terry Hilliard, The Reverend Doctor Wilton Pigott, and the Reverend Rob Gill officiating. Interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. James F. Webb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James was known by many as Mr. Mac was born on January 14, 1930 to Ransom Newton and Betty Alayne McLelland McElroy. A lifelong resident of Lauderdale County and Meridian, MS, he was a graduate of Meridian High School and attended Mississippi Naval Reserve and was activated while a student at MSU into the Naval Medical Corps as a medical corpsman. Mr. McElroy honorably served our Country as a Navy Medic attached to the Marines with Fox 27 during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star for his valor. He was a dedicated alumnus of Mississippi State University, he was a former member of the Bulldog Club and supported the Scholarship programs. James loved the outdoors. He enjoyed timber management and all wildlife conservation. He took great pleasure in sharing and harvesting the wild game with family and friends at Big Macs Hunting Club. He also enjoyed sharing the usage of his lake facilities with his friends and members of numerous churches. He has held membership in Roundtable Investors Club, Executive Board Member of the Choctaw Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, MCC Foundation and Lifetime Quest, and served as president and member o fthe Mechanical Board for the City of Meridian for many years. He was honored as Mechanical Contractor Of the year in Mississippi and also served as President of the Mechanical Contractors Association. James had a deep and abiding faith. He was a member of Poplar Springs Drive United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class, served as president of the Mens Club, Board of Trustees, Chaired two major building expansions, and served on various other committees.

He is survived by his wife Fleta Johnson McElroy Sons, James A. McElroy, Jr. of Jackson, MS, Ransom M. McElroy of New Orleans, LA, John Clinton McElroy Dana of Meridian Grandsons, James A. McElroy III, John Clinton McElroy II, Landon McElroy and Kalab Holcomb Granddaughters, Carrie McElroy Page Travis, Kristen McElroy, Madelyn McElroy, and Makenna McElroy Two sisters, Ann McElroy Johnson John and Betty Hopper Ike one Brother, Bobby McElroyMarsha.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ransom N. and Alayne McElroy.

Pallbearers are his Grandsons James A. McElroy III, John Clinton McElroy II, Landon McElroy, and Kalab Holcomb Charlie Pap McElroy, Joe Wilkerson, and Dr. Larry Pupa.

Honorary pallbearers are Haskell Bateman, Harry Mayer, David Barr, Bob Kingsmill, and Daniel Self.

Family request memorials to be made to Lamar Athletics, Poplar Springs Drive United Methodist Church, or Mississippi Veterans Association.
