He had served in the Air Force and after his discharge went to school at the University of Alabama and graduated with a Masters Degree in Education. Robert taught English at Kate Griffin and then later went into School Administration at Meridian High School. Robert was a Mason and a member of Earnest Workers Circle, Kings Daughters and Sons International. He was an avid horseman, having bred and trained Tennessee Walking horses. He was particularly fond of riding Greyboy. He enjoyed watching Cindy and Holly perform in many horse shows bringing home blue ribbons, trophies, and hay. Robert was a National Rifle Association pistol instructor. He and his wife enjoyed teaching the gun classes which gave the students lessons in gun safety and experience in shooting at the range. He was proficient on the range. For over 20 years, each summer was spent at Fort Walton Beach, Florida spending time on the pontoon or doing a little fishing with the grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Eatman Hodges children, John David Hodges of Meridian, Jeffrey Howard Hodges of Brandon, Cynthia Leigh Chambers and husband David of Garland, Texas, and Holly Ann Crane and husband Jay of Meridian four grandchildren, Abigail Leonard of Rockwall, Texas, Nicholas Chambers of Garland, Texas, Jay Crane II of Meridian, and Matthew Crane of Starkville.
