Robert, aged 76 years, was born in Gorman, Texas, on August 2, 1941, to Opal and Robert Elton Powell. He was one of two children born of this union. His sister, Sylvia Butler, predeceased him, as well as his beloved stepfather, Howard Poovey.
Robert passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 17, 2018.
After graduating from high school, Robert entered the Air Force, proudly serving for four years. He remained fiercely patriotic for the remainder of his life. After his tour in the Air Force, he began a 20-year career with Anthony Forest Products retiring as plant manager. He and family moved to Meridian in 1985 where he began a 27-year career as Sales Manager for MS Laminators.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Dixie Ornsby Powell and their precious daughter Kay Barrow and husband John, of Waynesville, NC.
Robert was a man of great principle, who loved God, his family and his country. He was a very loyal friend and a man with a delightful sense of humor. He laughed easily and much. Robert had many funny sayings that will be long remembered.
He was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church of Meridian, MS, and the Pat Martin Sunday School Class.
Services for Robert are Sunday, January 21st, at 2:00 p.m. at Stephens Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 1:00-2:00 pm at the funeral home. Pallbearers will include Robert Holladay, Scott Sollie, David Henderson, Dudley Williams, Larry Williams, Unrue Goodman, and Johnny Robinson. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Pat Martin Sunday School Class.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that any gifts be to The American Cancer Society or to the building fund of New Hope Baptist Church.
