Ruby Grace Hendley Gordon went to be with the Lord on October 19, 2024, at the age of 95.
Ruby was born to John Albert Hendley, Sr. and Ruby (Lee) Hendley on February 2, 1929, in Yantley, Alabama. She loved the Lord, her family, her friends, her flowers, and hard work. She was a woman of great faith and integrity. As she would say, “It’s all Jesus”.
She had a passion for children which included driving the school bus at Southeast Lauderdale School District for 31 years. Her heart loved working in the nursery at church as well. As the oldest of twelve children, hard work was instilled in Ruby at a young age. Even into her later years, she continued to work in her beautiful flower beds until her health deteriorated.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruby Hendley; her husband of 58 years, George W. “Skeeter” Gordon; her sister, Katherine L. Taylor; and her brothers, John Albert Hendley, Jr., J.W. Hendley, Nelson Hendley, Billy Joe Hendley, and Tim Hendley.
Ruby is survived by her loving daughter, Lynn Cochran (Glenn); granddaughter, Christina Cochran Allen (Andy), great granddaughters, Katie Claire and Adalynn Grace Allen; sisters, Annie Virginia Davis, Lillie Williams, Marilyn Long (Carl), and Mollie C. Bounds (Steve); her brother, Paul David Hendley; along with many nieces and nephews.
Ruby’s family will receive friends and family on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 10-11:00 am, at Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes-Downtown. The Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 am in the chapel with Dr. Richard Wallace officiating the ceremony. Ruby will be laid to rest in the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery next to her husband.
The family wishes to thank Ruby’s special friends, Mary Cochran; her neighbors of many years, The Keenes; Hebron Baptist Church, where she was friends with many for over 60 years; along with her new friends from Wisteria Manor and the Hospice Care Group of Quitman, who were their angels here on earth during Ruby’s illness.
The staff of Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes-Downtown is grateful for the opportunity to honor Ruby’s life and memory and to serve her loving family during this time.
