Thomas Jerry South, originally of Hueytown, Alabama, passed away on November 6, 2023, at RP White Nursing Center in Meridian, Mississippi.
Thomas was born to Thomas Murry and Malene (Porter) South on July 4, 1941, in Winfield, Alabama. After high school, Thomas enlisted with the United States Army, where he served as SP5, Specialist 5 Sergeant. While serving his country, he obtained several commendations including Sharpshooter and the National Defense Service Medal.
His wife of 36 years, Mitzi, lovingly recalls what a “great big heart” he had, for not just his family, but for the older folks in their community. When they resided in Hueytown, he could often be found plowing the fields for the older folks who could no longer do so for themselves. In his free time, he could be found enjoying his favorite outdoor activities of hunting and fishing. Thomas served as the Supervisor of the Street Department of Hueytown for many years before retiring and moving to Collinsville, Mississippi with his wife.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Mitzi Jo (Ethridge) South; daughter, Courtney Hatten (Jeffery); and two grandchildren, Kendal Rae Hatten and Colton Jeffery Hatten; along with his many friends.
There will be a memorial service at a later date for Thomas.
The staff at Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes-North are grateful for the opportunity to honor Thomas, his memory, and his wonderful family.
