Mr. Hagwood, 95, of Causeyville, died Monday, April 9, in York, Alabama. He was born on August 30, 1922, in Petal, Mississippi, the last of four children born to Forrest County Deputy Sheriff Howard Lee Hagwood and his wife Dona Doree Smith Hagwood.
After his father was killed in the line of duty in 1927, Mr. Hagwood moved with his mother to Causeyville and grew up on his paternal grandfather's farm during the Great Depression. Mr. Hagwood attended Mississippi State College (MSU) on the G. I. Bill and graduated in 1949. He worked as a teacher at Beat Four High School (Clarke County) until 1957 and with the Mississippi Department of Human Services until his retirement in 1984. He was a farmer, an avid outdoorsman, and a strong supporter of education. He loved his family and friends dearly.
Mr. Hagwood was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Birdie Dee Hagwood and Susie Mae Hagwood Swain; a brother, Jack Percy Hagwood; and by his devoted wife of sixty years Virginia Eloise Martin Hagwood.
Survivors include his three children Virginia Etheridge (Larry), Judy Culpepper (Jimmy), and Howard Hagwood (Linda). Additional survivors include his seven grandchildren: Col. Rob Culpepper USAF (Angela), Rev. Ryan Culpepper (Katie), Jay Etheridge (Elyse), Joey Etheridge (Brandi), LeAnn Oliver (Michael), Kara Skinner (Jonathan), and Jon Hagwood (Samantha); and fourteen great-grandchildren: Caitlin, Megan, Savannah, Macy, Sarah Kate, Jodi, Lauren, Rylee, Mallory, Jon Alex, Jaylin, Zoey, Ryder, and Lana.
The family requests that memorials be made to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 901 E Street, NW, Suite 100, Washington, DC 20004-2025 (info@nleomf.org).
